Abstract
(en)
Posits the influence of a specific Eucharistic rite, in use in North Italy in the Renaissance, upon a significant development of the Man of Sorrows type in the late 15th c.: its physical and emotional activation in direct emotional appeal to the viewer. Cites as the clearest example of the new type, Andrea Mantegna's ca.1490 panel in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.
