Abstract (en)
Discusses portraits of the first quarter of the 19th c., and asserts that so-called folk painting is, in fact, a middle class art form derived not from the historically sanctioned customs of traditional groups but from the desires of the progressive and upwardly mobile segments of society to imitate the art of the elite.
