Abstract
(en)
Discusses Alciato's emblem Duodecim certamina Herculis (The Twelve Labors of Hercules), which first appeared in 1546, as the starting point for allegorical depictions of Herculean deeds decorating a triumphal arch erected for the visit of Henry III of France to Mantua in 1574. Notes deviations from the Alciato tradition, and warns about the extent to which a given image was open to multiple--possibly even contradictory--interpretations.
