Discusses Alciati's symbolic use of the two Venuses of Renaissance Platonism in the 1534 edition of his Emblemata in which he provides clear and provacative images of Venus Vulgaris, symbol of earthly beauty, and Venus Caelestis, symbol of divine or spiritual beauty. The first Venus may be regarded as representing the physical body of a work of art or the dry letter of a text, which is subject both to time and death; while the second Venus represents its spirit or meaning.
