Describes the surviving wooden superstructures of the late 13th-early 14th c. domes of the basilica of S. Antonio, Padua, perhaps the earliest domes in the West to have been designed entirely as double shells. Suggests that the thrust of the outer dome (in wood and lead) was designed to counter that of the lower dome (in masonry).
