Abstract (en)
Traces the history of the Ospizio Apostolico dei Poveri Invalidi, a network of hospices commissioned by Innocent XII in various locations in Rome, including the Ospizio di S. Giovanni in Laterano (in the Lateran palace), Ospizio di S. Sisto, Ospizio di S. Michele a Ripa, and Palazzo di Montecitorio. Describes the architecture (1693-1699) associated with these institutions, much of it by Carlo Fontana. Also includes: biographical notes by Paola Torniai on Innocent XII; a section by Maria Mercalli on the medals of his pontificate (1691-1700); three essays by Irving Lavin on Bernini, especially his bust of the Savior (Norfolk, Chrysler Museum) and a re-discovered copy in the cathedral of Sées; and information on other works of art depicting Christ as Savior, including Courtois's Blood of Christ Museo di Roma) and sculptural reliefs (insegne) from the hospices.
