Traces the iconography in Gothic art (1150-1350) of the Suffering Christ on the Cross, an image that combines the mysticism of the Passion with the theme of the Man of Sorrows. Discusses works of art from Sardinia (polychrome sculpture and paintings) that perpetuate this iconography as late as the 17th c.
