Surveys the life and career of Spielmann as editor and critic. Editor of The Magazine of Art (1887-1904), supporter of the New Sculpture movement and particularly Alfred Gilbert, friend and adviser to artists, inter alia Hubert von Herkomer, Spielmann was a prominent advocate of academic taste. Includes a bibliography of Spielmann's writings.
