Abstract (en)
On the four surviving leaves of an illuminated Life of S. Thomas Becket (J. Paul Getty Jr. collection; British Library MS Loan 88). Attributes these to an anonymous London artist working in the 1230s or slightly later, and suggests the manuscript was the model for a lost life of the saint by Matthew Paris ca.1245. Concludes that the leaves seem to provide the best evidence that a format for illustrated saints' lives was first established at a center other than Saint Albans, and that it was taken up by Matthew Paris for his own illustrated versions.
