Gives an account of Degas's having done this 1873 painting (Pau, Musée des beaux-arts) on speculation, hoping it would be bought by Manchester cotton manufacturer William Cottrill. Relates how it was eventually purchased in 1878 by the museum in Pau--this being the first official purchase of a painting by Degas or any member of the Impressionist group. Emphasizes the entrepreneurial interconnections that link the artist, the subject matter of the painting, its promotors, and its eventual patrons and public, as well as the relatively conservative nature of its early avant-garde style.
