Abstract (en)
Discusses two companion pieces and portraits, mentioned in Bainbrigge Buckeridge's Essay toward an English School of Painters, 1706, as of a 'Highland laird' and an 'Irish Tory', both by John Michael Wright. Identifies the former as a portrait of Sir Mungo Murray, ca.1683-1684 (Edinburgh, Scottish National Portrait Gallery), known as Highland Chieftain. The latter is of Sir Neill O'Neill of Killelough, Co. Antrim, 1680 (London, Tate Gallery) and has long been known to be the 'Irish Tory'.
