- Through analysis of documentary and chronological evidence and comparison of architectural details, reassesses Bramante's dependence upon sources in Florentine and Roman architecture. Shows that his knowledge of these, though extensive, was indirect, and that the primary influence on him in the 1470s and 80s was Francesco di Giorgio, who together with Alberti formed Bramante's Milanese style. Concludes that his architecture was in general the product of Urbinate and North Italian, especially Mantuan, culture.
