Reassesses Bernini's relationship to the redecoration of the interior of the Pantheon, Rome, under Alexander VII (1655-67). Presents evidence that Bernini actually opposed any scheme to alter the building; and compares 17th c. attitudes toward the Pantheon to the attitude during the Renaissance.
