Abstract (en)

Considers four lighthouse designs which provide insights into Latrobe's innovative thinking about structure and form, inspired by John Smeaton. Argues that the lighthouse tower, constructed between 1818 and 1821 at New Orleans, collapsed because of faulty workmanship. Suggests that the tower, although it can be viewed superficially in the context of French Neo-classical models, was also intended as a symbol of the French having left the Louisiana Territory.
