Abstract (en)
Argues that the setting of Prince Baltasar Carlos in the Riding School (Grosvenor Estate, Dukes of Westminster, Eaton Hall) is the picadero or riding ring of the Alcázar, Madrid, and that the building in the background contains the apartments of Olivares, Master of the Horse, shown supervising the prince's equestrian training, and his wife, the prince's governess. Analyzes painting's symbolic significance in relation to emblems likening the education of a prince to the management of a horse. Supports and expands upon Levey's interpretation of the subject as the education of the prince, and concludes that this is the consummate Baroque state portrait.
