Abstract (en)

Studies the iconography of SS. Francis and Mary Magdalen in 13th c. Italian paintings of the Crucifixion and painted Crosses in relation to religious and cultural developments in Tuscany and Umbria, and especially Franciscan teachings on the necessity for penitential suffering for spiritual purification. Notes the inclusion of patrons in 13th and 14th c. depictions of the scene.
