Abstract (en)
Analyzes the divergences between the 8th c. life of S. Guthlac of Crowland by the scribe Felix and the early 13th c. Guthlac Roll (MS Harley Y 6, British Library, London), which illustrates scenes from the life of the saint based on Felix's account. Concentrates on the economic and historical background of the Roll, focusing on the status of Crowland Abbey, Guthlac as a soldier of Christ, and pilgrimage as a form of popular piety.
