Reports on five carved reliefs found in 1983 excavations at the Church Lane site where they had been reused face inward in a 19th c. cellar. The reliefs (now Canterbury City Museums) are dated here ca.1080-1090 and, as such, are the only known local precursors to the 11th c. cathedral crypt capitals. Author suggests the carvings may have formed part of a choir screen.
