Discusses controversy surrounding restoration of antique sculptures at Petworth House. Conservators must decide whether to return sculptures to their original white leaving areas of restoration clearly apparent, or to retain their 18th c. appearance. At that time they were given an artificial patination to disguise restoration. Considers the question in terms of taste in Britain ca.1750-1825 as well as modern attitudes towards conservation.
