Discusses 14 essays (of which 12 are papers presented at a conference on iconography in historical geography held at the University of Nottingham in 1984), dealing with natural and built landscapes, landscape paintings and descriptions of landscape in maps and in various kinds of literature. Landscape is considered as a cultural image or "text" which when "read" in terms of deep iconography reveals itself as informed by and informing social, cultural and political issues. Many of the essays focus on landscape (including the cityscape) and its management and representation in Britain in the 18th and 19th cs.
