Abstract (en)

Considers the significance of the Roman Cosmati mosaics commissioned in the late 13th c. for Westminster Abbey, London. Analyzes the chronology of the mosaics and their relationship to developments in contemporary Italian monumental art (1260s-1290s), disputing recent discussions. Views the mosaics as an aspect of patronage at Westminster Abbey, and examines their liturgical and symbolic importance within the context of the English court style.
