Describes landscape paintings of the late 1860s by California painters Thomas Hill, William Keith and Norton Bush, all active in San Francisco in this period, and compares these with more sophisticated paintings done by the same artists in the 1870s. All works cited are in the collection of the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA.
