- Surveys previous interpretations of the Tempest (Venice, Accademia); argues on the basis of comparison with the relief by Amadeo in the Cappella Colleoni, Bergamo, that the scene represents God warning Adam and Eve. Identifies the lightning as a symbol of the wrath of God, citing examples from the literature on emblems, and the broken column as an allusion to the death of the body as the first consequence of original sin. Relates the painting to the context of contemporary Venetian society and religious devotion, and to the patronage of Gabriele Vendramin.
