Introduces a collection of papers on aspects of the relationship between Christianity and the art and culture of the Italian Renaissance, from a conference held in Tallahassee and Florence in the spring and summer of 1985. Comments on the development of emotional pietism in the 13th-15th cs. and the expression of Franciscan and Dominican ideals in Italian art (examples are Coppo di Marcovaldo, Giotto, and Masaccio); also examines Christian social vision (especially the role of lay confraternities) and the Renaissance, and the synthesis represented by Christian humanism.
