Studies Savonarola's preaching in relation to the major artistic commissions in Florence before, during, and after his rise to political power. Analyzes his effort to achieve a balance between traditional Christianity and classical humanism and the influence on patronage and the visual arts of this struggle for assimilation and redefinition. Outlines results of a survey of Florentine patronage, 1494-1503.
