Abstract (en)

Suggests that modern interpretations of 15th and early 16th c. Italian altarpieces as conveyors of elaborate theological content are inappropriate, since the evidence of surviving documents shows that the main concern of patrons was to have devotional images of saints and especially the Virgin. Argues that even when the subject was one now characterized as a narrative (e.g. the Annunciation), the setting functioned as an attribute of the principal subject. Also reexamines the significance of kneeling donor figures.
