Abstract (en)
Seeks to clarify the relationship between art criticism and the study or activity of iconology. Examines the aesthetic and intellectual mechanisms involved in experiencing a work of art, specifically religious art, from within the cultural tradition that produced it. Deals with the critic's perception of the work of art, the activity of iconological interpretation (focusing and expanding on the methodology of Panofsky), and the role of icon-theology (method defined here for interpretation of religious art) in relation to both.
