Describes the costume worn by Elizabeth I in three portraits of ca.1588-1589 (Woburn Abbey; English National Portrait Gallery; and William Tyrwhitt-Drake collection), and suggests on the basis of its symbolism that the gown is the one worn by the queen when she reviewed her troops at Tilbury at the time of the threatened Spanish invasion in August 1588.
