Reflections on Henri-Pierre Roché, especially his novel, Victor, set in the New York art world of 1916-1917. Identifies the characters that form the love triangle in the novel--artists Marcel Duchamp and Beatrice Wood and the author himself; proposes that Roché's Jules and Jim features the same trio. Notes that Victor offers rare insights into Duchamp's day-to-day life at the very beginning of his New York sojourn.
