The politics of détournement, a central motif in the practice of the Situationist International (1957-1968) which lead to a politics based on illicit appropriation and piracy, is seen as the precursor of simulationism and appropriation in contemporary American art. Notes that this new work takes commodification and the spectacle as its principal subject, and uses détournement as its main tactic.
