Detailed analysis of documentary evidence concerning the building of the cathedral of Orvieto, 1347-1349, during the Black Death. Includes information concerning economics; building materials and their provenance and transportation; the various workshops and their location in the town; labor and salaries; and the construction of the mechanical clock of the Torretta dell'Orologio, here related to efforts of the Opera del Duomo to regulate the hours of labor.
