Discusses the significance and symbolism of the radiated crown assumed by Cosimo I de' Medici as grand duke of Tuscany (1569). Focuses on the association of Tuscany with the kingdom of Israel, and of Noah with Janus and Etruria, according to Annius of Viterbo, as the basis for Cosimo's ideological aims expressed in his crown.
