Published in conjunction with an exhibition in the Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem, celebrating the museum's 75th anniversary. Surveys material related to the civic guards, with special reference to the period of ca.1575-ca.1650. Scholarly essays include discussions of the group portraits of civic guards in Amsterdam (ca.1500-1650), Haarlem (ca.1575-1650), and elsewhere; the silver owned by the civic guards (predominantly 16th c.), and the buildings, the so-called doelens (ca.1550-ca.1800). Full catalogue entries with explanatory texts and reproductions of all works shown and of comparative material.
