Abstract (en)
Concludes that three mid-12th c. mosaic decorations in Sicilian churches (the Cappella Palatina, Palermo, the cathedral of Cefalù, and the Martorana, Palermo) were based on the classical Byzantine system defined here, but that in each case the system was adapted for subjective purposes of the patron, ignoring the classical system's deeper theological foundations.
