Reexamines relationships of iconography and chronology between the apse decorations of S. Maria in Trastevere--the mosaic of Innocent II and the Marian cycle by Cavallini--and the mosaic by Torriti in the apse of S. Maria Maggiore. Also reexamines the relationship of these mosaics to the procession of the Assumption and to icons borne in the procession in the 12th and 13th cs. Notes Franciscan support for belief in the bodily Assumption, and argues that Torriti's mosaics in S. Maria Maggiore reflect Franciscan concern for establishing a human, temporal setting for religious subjects. Concludes that Cavallini's historicizing cycle in S. Maria in Trastevere is later, and that it was added to bring the archaic image of the Virgin up to date.
