Abstract
(en)
Discusses West's experience in Italy, the artists who influenced him (especially Mengs), as well as copies and other works executed by him while there; notes that he adopted the Neo-classical style only after leaving Italy. Relates his painting, Angelica and Medoro, ca.1765 (Binghamton, State University, University Art Gallery) to his friendship with Angelica Kauffmann.
