Abstract (en)
On Morse's ambivalence toward European culture. Focuses on The Gallery of the Louvre (Chicago, Terra Museum of American Art), painted 1832-33 after the artist had spent a year and a half in Italy; interprets it as a treatise on European art and culture, an expression of Morse's views on America's cultural heritage, and his last healthy commentary on Europe before his anti-Catholic, nativist crusades of the 1830s.
