Abstract
(en)
As an instance of the role of Italian architecture in architectural development in the United States, studies the axially asymmetrical Italianate villa style in 19th c. domestic architecture. Focuses on three types of facade massing illustrated in Downing's Cottage residences: the irregular villa in the Italian style, bracketed; the loggia-villa with corner towers; and the so-called Wightwick-Downing pattern, a version of Wightwick's Anglo-Italian villa (from the Palace of architecture).
