Discusses the study of past social practices, arguing that a "discontinuity approach" is particularly appropriate for the investigation of the first millennium, which saw three major changes in Europe: the disappearance of classical antiquity, the rise of the West, and the integration of barbarian areas into mainline development. Comments on trends over the course of the millennium, e.g. in agricultural practices, land use, settlement sites, and the burial of goods with the dead.
