Examines urbanization in Scandinavia, early 8th c. to mid-12th c., in light of archaeological evidence. Notes two partially different systems: Viking towns, 700-1000, and the towns of the Christian kings, 1000-1150, and sees these as expressions of changing structures of power: connects the early towns with external exploitation (Viking raids), and the later system, with its larger and more numerous towns, with internal exploitation.
