Abstract (en)
Discusses the Medieval science of time-reckoning and calendar construction, related to the need to determine the date of Easter, and the two basic tables upon which it depends: the Julian solar calendar and the Paschal table. Examines the visual patterning of time following Bede's De temporum ratione, in 10th and 11th c. computus tables. Focuses on the example of MS 17 of S. John's College, Oxford, which contains tables of Abbon of Fleury; and draws attention to correspondences between the ordering of time and cosmic and spiritual order for the monastic mind. Indicates specifically monastic images of order associated with the computus, regarding history-writing and architecture.
