Abstract (en)
Contrasts differing interpretations of Vasari's Lives by three 19th c. connoisseurs in Florence: Spence's gossipy guidebook recommendations, Cavalcaselle's disagreements with Vasari in connection with his research for the first English translation, and Ruskin's profound appreciation of Vasari in symbolic terms. Analyzes the three different approaches applied to a single monument: S. Croce, Florence. Illustrates Cavalcaselle's drawings of frescoes in S. Croce.
