Reviews the documentation of the so-called "Giants", equestrian statues of a man and a woman made of wood and plaster, used in festival processions in Messina since the early 16th c. and partially restored or re-made several times in their history. Discusses the attribution of various elements to Giovanni Montorsoli, to his assistant Martino Montanini, and/or to Andrea Calamech. Assesses the symbolic role of the statues in the folklore of Messina.
