Refutes the idea that the presence of a large number of discarded pottery vessels at an excavation necessarily indicates a center of local production. Cites examples of "discards", 14th-16th cs., found in Rome (and now in the Museo di Roma) but not made there; instead they were brought from other manufactories in Italy, perhaps for use as models.
