Discusses four examples of the iconography of the soul of the Virgin (depicted as a child) in Western Byzantine portrayals of the Dormition, focusing especially on two from Central Italy: a late 11th c. relief on an ivory chest in the monastery of Farfa and the early 12th c. Triptych of the Savior in the cathedral of Tivoli.
