Abstract
(en)
Discusses the development of two characteristic facial types of Christ in the pre-Iconoclastic Byzantine iconography of Syria and northern Mesopotamia, 6th-7th cs., and their relationship to the iconography of the two natures of Christ. Focuses on the image of Christ on the coins of Justinian II (685-695 and 705-711) as an example of imperial assertion of orthodox doctrine over Monophysitism. Traces the virtual disappearance of the younger facial type after the Iconoclastic period.
