Abstract (en)
Two concurrent exhibitions in Britain devoted to the work of Diego Rivera and Fernand Léger (winter 1987), prompts this reexamination of these artists, who were almost exact contemporaries. Notes their conflicting attempts to create a public realist art, particularly their differing approaches to Cubism and Social Realism, and relates these issues to the problems of producing political art in the 1980s. Cites the views of Hal Foster and Walter Benjamin in this context.
