Examines the notion of the avant-garde and counterculture in the 1980s. Argues that the avant-garde no longer acts as a radical counterculture but exists as an agent of the culture industry. Cites an eclectic group of American artists (including Sherrie Levine, Haim Steinbach, Jennifer Bolande, Peter Halley, Louise Lawler) whose work purposely contradicts the inevitability of countercultures while still remaining immanent--that is, hovering within the culture.
