Argues that the post-modernist 1980s, with its inflation of sign-fragments, was the epoch of the operatic--a period of extreme theatricalism in the visual arts, an attempt by artists to increase the power and influence of art in the face of an implicit recognition of its diminished significance despite all the attention and acclaim it receives.
