"They murmuring divide, while the wind sleeps beneath, and the numbers are counted in silence" : the dispersal of the illustrations to Dante's Divine comedy
Traces in detail the process whereby the series of 102 watercolors and drawings was divided and dispersed in 1918 (John Linnell collection, sold Christie's, London, 15 Mar 1918), and the responses such division occasioned. The series, begun ca.1824, was left unfinished by Blake at the time of his death.
